Become a licensed painter in South Australia
Qualification Description
In South Australia, the licensing system is administered by Consumer and Business Services.
To be eligible you must be able to prove you have assets of at least $10,000.
The National Institute of Painting and Decorating recommends the following pathway to licensing:
Certificate III Painting and Decorating
This can be obtained by completing an apprenticeship, or by Recognition of Prior Learning. This course is compulsory for any painters wanting to do wallpapering, or decorative finishes in South Australia, and is the nationally recognised course for painters who want to work in other states besides South Australia. Completion of this course means you do not have to complete an interview with the government to get your licence.
Duration: Painters with a minimum of 4 years experience can complete in 12 weeks.
South Australian Trade Contractor Business Management Course
Painters who do not wish to work in other states, or who do not do any wallpapering or decorative finishes must still complete the Business Management Course. On completion of the course they will still need to undergo a technical interview with the Office of Business and Consumer Affairs.
The Business Management course is compulsory for all persons wanting a licence as a painter or decorator, and includes the topics:
- BSBESB401 Research and develop business plans
- BSBESB402 Establish legal and risk management requirements of new business ventures
This training is delivered by Best Option Training in consultation with NIPD. You will learn:
- How to set up and run a business legally
- Insurance requirements
- Tax requirements
- Safety requirements
- Contract Law
- Business planning
- Marketing
- Financial business planning
- Working out your hourly rate
- Risk management
Duration: 24 hours, self-paced.
Course requirements: Students must pass a basic literacy test, have access to a laptop or computer, and internet access.
How much does this course cost?
The course fees for Certificate III Painting and Decorating and Business Course is $2500.
The course fees for the Business Course only is $700.
Best Option Training cannot accept more than $1500 as a deposit.
How long will it take to complete this course?
The Certificate III Painting and Decorating can be completed in 12 weeks for painters with a minimum of 4 years of experience.
The Business course is self-paced and can be completed in 24 hours.

- 100 points of identification
- A pen
- Closed footwear
- High visibility shirt or vest
- Students are required to have access to the internet and a computer with a webcam.
